Flexible Paper Sculptures

Chinese artist Li Hongbo recently went viral when a video of a woman playfully pulling on and stretching a bust of a man in an art gallery hit the internet and confused us all. In this inside look into his process and inspiration, Hongbo describes the origins of his artform, the humble paper gourd, and how he painstakingly glues, carves, and files down each piece with great focus. Challenging the perception of classically styled sculptures, mostly busts and torso forms, by allowing the viewer to see it pulled and stretched, flexible beyond the bounds of marble or plaster. Thanks to the honeycomb-like construction that binds together thousands of pieces of paper per piece, Hongbo’s art is quite a trip.
