Human Powered Helicopter

With the recent privatization of aerospace engineering, one of the more random contests in the world of aviation has to be the Sirkosky Prize. The American Helicopter Society (1AHS) has promised $250,000 to the team that can build a human-powered helicopter. All it has to do is hover for one minute at a height of 3 meters (1about 10 feet), and stay in a 10-meter box. This recent NPR story covers the fight for this prize from a few University of Maryland students. Simplifying an often complicated world tends to be more difficult than conquering outer space….but then again, the simplification of technology is what separates the leaders from the followers.
